My brother-in-law (an emergency room physician) and his wife (who is a manager in an international bank) who live in Houston (as do we) voted for Trump. Now they’re not the wild-eyed fanatical Trump supporters, but more the “I don’t want to talk about Trump with you” type in-laws. Or should I now say they were Trump supporters. Their house flooded during Harvey and their interactions with FEMA now have them pulling their hair out. (Our house came through Harvey just fine.) Now their house also flooded two years ago (yes, their house is next to a bayou), but two years ago their interactions with FEMA were professional and quickly handled. And of course we politely pointed out that was when Obama was President and FEMA was run by emergency professionals, and now FEMA is run by Trump and his politically, not professionally, picked people. Now granted that Harvey was much worse than what happened in 2015, but for them flooded out is still flooded out. And so they are finally publicly admitting that Trump and his administration are incompetent (particularly FEMA for them, especially compared to their FEMA experience of two years ago), and that they made a big mistake voting for Trump. They are rebuilding their house, even though many of their neighbors are selling, because they don’t want to take the huge loss from selling. But they also finally realized that they need to raise their house by 6 feet and can only afford to do that with FEMA’s help, hence the hair-pulling frustration. Some lessons have to be learned the hard way I guess. It’s just too bad it took a hurricane like Harvey for them to realize how bad Trump and his administration are, especially when they really needed help. Now we have also refrained from any excessive “I told you so’s” and are gladly helping them with whatever we can do. But if it weren’t for Harvey and FEMA, they would still be Trump supporters.
