In both cases, the end result was a financial crisis. Similarly, economists Atif Mian, Amir Sufi, and Ludwig Straub recently found that a “saving glut of the rich” since the early 1980s financed a borrowing binge by everyone else. There would have been no need for all that debt if the distribution of incomes hadn’t become so skewed.
