After playing a clip of President Trump telling him that he is “the least racist person that you have ever met,” CNN’s Don Lemon shot back: “Just because you say you’re not racist, doesn’t make it so.”
When they last had unified control of the federal government under George W. Bush, congressional Republicans spent like drunken sailors. As vice president, Dick Cheney reportedly declared that Ronald “Reagan proved deficits don’t matter.” The tea party movement that emerged after Republicans lost power and the 2008 financial crisis put a heavy emphasis on tackling the debt. Conservatives running for office chastised the establishment GOP for its lack of fiscal restraint, and many current members of Congress got elected promising they wouldn’t repeat those same mistakes. But once they got power over the purse strings again, and then Trump took over their party, the tone of most elected Republicans changed again. “Trump is the first member of the American elite in 20 years who compliments Russia,” Rykov posted after the election. “Trump will smash America as we know it, we’ve got nothing to lose. Do we want the grandmother Hillary? No.”
Today, graduate students in over 60 colleges nationwide will walk out to protest the horrible tax bill that will increase taxable income by as much as 400 percent for research and teaching assistants at major universities across the US. As a result, the bill will undermine the quality and competitiveness of US graduate programs and make graduate school unaffordable and less accessible to underrepresented communities. Please support our graduate students by calling your representatives and amplifying their stories on the #GradTaxWalkOut hashtag.
