曾国藩和李鸿章 were the best scholar-warriors the Chinese system ever produced. Their IQ probably were higher than anyone on this group. They also had support with 慈禧 who is most open minded and capable within the royal family. Yet they failed. We had to scrap the system and started to copy west ever since.

In some way, China was simply unlucky. When the presume came from the west, China was ruled by a privileged minority. For all her relative open-mind-ness, 慈禧 was a proud 满族, unwilling to give up power to 汉族. So China had to overthrow 清朝。In contrast, when west power came to Japan, they can use the traditionally powerless 天皇 as their rally point for reform. Basically, reform but with the claim to restore which is much more acceptable to the conservative mass.

One thing I've found amazing in "Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom" is that it described the political and press debates in UK and US about the merit of intervention in the Chinese civil war at the time（太平天国）, it sounded so similar to contemporary debates, like whether to intervene in Syria civil war.
