赵宇空 wrote “美国大学录取寻求标新立异,试图把大学办成大杂剧院,而不是根据学生的资格来录取”。This is the crux of his disconnect to American society, his blind spot. Contrary to what 儒家 has led Chinese to believe, elite US college education is not a reward for excellent scores and hard work. Diversity, or using 赵's term, 大杂剧院, is a "compelling interest" recognized by Supreme Court Justices, both left and right. American society needs a lot more 儒家教育 to change its mind on this point.
One can say US was founded on the very idea that diverse interests can work together in a single polity. Before the founding of US, democracy has only worked in small spaces and homogenous populations. There was lots skepticism on whether democracy can work in such a large space, and diverse interests. The primary author of US Constitution, James Madison argued forcefully that it's the very fact of diverse interests, coupled with balance of power, can work. History has proven that he's right. The U.S. system lasted for more two hundred years, survived lots of dramatic social changes, two world wars, one civil war, and constant political battles. Looking at governing systems around the world, no other system managed this feat during the centuries of dramatic changes.
Choose between 儒家社会 or US Constitution, I would choose US Constitution every day of the week, twice on Sunday.
@谈云识天气 I'll have to remind you, that both in Bakke and Grutter cases, there were 4 justices dissenting from the majority opinion of 5 justices , so it is NOT true that "both left and right" supports so called "diversity" at the expense of equality
@Tony Xu prop 209: "(a) The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting."
